What actually causes acne?

Acne develops from a combination of factors: excess oil (sebum) production driven by hormones, clogged pores from dead skin cells, a bacterium called Cutibacterium acnes that thrives in that oily, clogged environment, and the inflammation that results. Effective treatment usually needs to address more than one of these factors at once, which is why single-ingredient routines often fall short.

Why combination therapy works better than one product

Clinical guidelines consistently recommend combining treatments with different mechanisms — for example, a topical retinoid to keep pores clear alongside benzoyl peroxide to reduce acne-causing bacteria. Guidelines specifically advise against antibiotic-only treatment, since combining antibiotics with benzoyl peroxide helps prevent bacterial resistance from developing.

How do professional chemical peels help?

Peels containing salicylic acid or other organic acids exfoliate the buildup that clogs pores and have anti-inflammatory and oil-regulating effects. Clinical studies show meaningful reduction in comedones (clogged pores) after a series of peels, with salicylic acid in particular well-tolerated across a range of skin tones.

Does LED / blue light therapy actually work?

Blue light targets the porphyrins produced by acne-causing bacteria, helping reduce inflammatory lesions. Systematic reviews show blue light therapy produces measurable improvement in mild-to-moderate acne, though study quality varies and it works best as part of a broader plan rather than a standalone fix.

How long until I see results?

Most acne treatments take 4 to 6 weeks before you notice meaningful improvement, with continued progress over 2 to 3 months. This is because the skin cycle and inflammatory process both take time to reset — consistency with a plan matters more than switching products frequently.

Can acne treatment help prevent future scarring?

Yes — getting active inflammation under control early is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of permanent scarring. For patients who already have acne scars, microneedling is a complementary, evidence-based option once active breakouts are controlled.
