What is a biostimulator, and how is it different from filler?
Biostimulators — like poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) — work differently from traditional hyaluronic acid filler. Rather than simply adding volume, they trigger your body's own fibroblasts to gradually produce new collagen. The result builds slowly over weeks to months, rather than appearing all at once.
How It Works
Biostimulators trigger a controlled, subclinical inflammatory response in the skin. This activates macrophages and fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing new collagen, elastin, and other supportive proteins. As the product itself gradually breaks down over months, the new collagen it stimulated remains, providing structural support and improved skin quality that continues to build over time.
What to Expect
Most treatment plans involve a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, since results build gradually rather than immediately. Some initial volumizing effect from the injection fluid itself is visible right away but subsides within days; the true collagen-building effect typically becomes noticeable at 1 to 3 months and continues to improve for up to a year. Mild swelling, bruising, or small bumps at injection sites are common initially and resolve quickly.
